Growth Continues..

The Hudson Valley is in motion – let us help with your next project:  whether it’s developing a new site or building;  or, expanding or renovating an existing space – we can help!

Aging in Place-

Very few houses built more than ten years ago were constructed with adequate consideration of the benefits of universal design to adults that would like to remain in their homes as they age.  We can help evaluate existing homes or plan for new with an eye to details that can be improved to make life easier as we get older.

Universal Design-

New Construction or Renovation; Residential or Commercial; whether you would like to upgrade your existing fixtures to improve operability or you need to develop a full accessible route for your commercial development, we can help.

Residential Design-

We can help you develop your program and plan: from site selection and building orientation to space planning and interior design. Whether you are looking for a stamped foundation drawing to accompany your modular house plans, or you would like to fully develop a set of customized construction documents, we can help you achieve your goals.

Modular Building Systems-

The use of modular systems can have significant economic benefits.  Whether you are considering a modular residence or your commercial project may be appropriate for modular wall, floor or roof systems, we can help with any stage of the design.

Engineered Wood Products-

From laminated veneer lumber (LVLs) to I-joist framing, the evaluation and selection of products to be considered for your project can be daunting.  We can help with the design of systems utilizing these products and can assist with the evaluation of products for suitability on your project.

Pre-Engineered Metal Buildings-

The pre-engineered building manufacturers offer enormous value to customers and Red Hook Engineering can help with the evaluation and selection of products, the planning required for space utilization and the design of foundation systems to support the structures.

Lateral Load Resisting Systems- Wind and Seismic-

The wind blows and the earth shakes and Red Hook Engineering can help to ensure that your building can withstand the elements. Yes, even in New York, potential seismic forces may control the structural design of buildings, although most cases in our area are controlled by wind loads.  We can provide the calculations necessary for the design of your building to ensure compliance with Code minimums or to higher standards, if desired.

Framing Systems-

Buildings need a roof to keep out the elements, floors to support the occupants and walls to provide vertical support and space definition.  We can provide economical design solutions to fit the needs of your project.  Some options include:

  • Conventional “stick framing” with dimension lumber or light gauge steel;
  • Engineered Lumber solutions, such as I-joist systems and LVL or PSL beams and girders;
  • Steel Joist (“bar” joist) solutions for commercial or long span projects;
  • Pre-cast or cast-in-place concrete systems for floors, walls and roofs;

Foundations-

Building frames transfer the weights of materials and occupants along with the forces of wind and earthquakes, but need a foundation to transmit those loads to the ground.  Whether your project is a multi-story commercial building, or a modular residence, we can design he right foundation system to suit your needs and your site.

Retaining Walls-

When a sloped surface cannot meet the design requirements, or when a large grade change is necessary, a wall can be constructed to retain soils and enable the desired elevation changes.  We can design these walls for your project.  Segmental walls, using geotechnical engineered fabrics, or walls constructed of reinforced masonry, concrete or wood are some of the available design options to meet your aesthetic needs and budget constraints.

Steel, Concrete, Masonry and Wood-

The materials of structural engineering design utilized in conventional building construction include these basic elements.  Whether utilizing the current design Code from AISC, ACI or AWC, we can design the structural elements necessary to support the loads required for your project.

Beams, Columns and Frames-

The heart of structural engineering is the design of beams and columns.  A system of these support elements become the building frame and each building has a primary system of load resistance. We provide the calculations necessary for proper sizing of these structural elements.

Sewage Disposal Systems-

Sewage Disposal Systems

Proper treatment and disposal of our waste water directly impacts our ability to access clean, economical drinking water. We provide the engineering necessary for the construction of new disposal systems and the repair and rehabilitation of existing systems.

Water Supply Systems-

Clean drinking water is a scarce commodity in many parts of the world and many in our area are becoming aware that watershed protection is important for the future of our standard of living. We provide the engineering services associated with individual well installations and municipal supply main development.

Storm Water Management Systems-

With increased expectation of extreme weather events, adequate analysis and design of proper storm water management systems are more important than ever.  We can develop economical solutions for your desired project design life.

Vehicular and Pedestrian Building Access and Parking-

User friendly design is worth the extra effort and we can help find the right solution.

Highway Access Management-

The key to success is avoiding conflict.  Consideration of the surrounding uses to individual projects and locations can often reveal potential problem areas that can be avoided during the planning process.

Roadway Layout and Profiles-

Roadway Layout and Profiles

A well designed access road can make an enormous difference to residents or customers. We can help to ensure that designs utilize best management practices while conforming to generally accepted standards.

Land Grading and Control of Erosion and Sedimentation-

Most land development requires alterations to the ground surface.  The use of heavy equipment is usually required and is extremely expensive.  We can help manage the design process to ensure economical use of machinery as well as environmentally friendly methods and controls.

Municipal Approvals-

Virtually all work contemplated by property owners who desire to increase the value of their investment is subject to regulation.  Whether the project is associated with a building or land, it is always best to ask.  It is the property owner’s responsibility to conform to the regulations, not the contractor’s, and we can help you with understanding and negotiating the approval process.

We have successfully managed projects and obtained approvals for Site Plans and both Minor and Major Subdivisions in multiple municipalities in Dutchess County, NY:

  • Town of Hyde Park;
  • Town of Pleasant Valley;
  • Town of Poughkeepsie;
  • Town of Red Hook;
  • Town of Stanford;

And, we are familiar with the process requirements and points of contact for most other municipalities in the region.

Subdivisions-

In order to market and sell property, owners of existing parcels will often need to obtain municipal approval to modify property boundaries or “cut off” a separate parcel.  This process is called subdivision. We provide services associated with real property subdivisions and lot alterations, which may include: map development, lot layouts, sewage disposal system designs, water supply, drainage and more.  We can manage the approval process or assist when desired.

Site Planning-

Site Planning

Preparation of written and graphic plans to develop or improve your property will directly influence the success of your efforts. We can help you with everything from the design of your dreamscape to a new layout design for parking associated with a commercial expansion.  Red Hook Engineering is experienced with the municipal approval process, where every design decision has economic implications, as well as LEED inspired green design practices and living infrastructure.
